Zachary Taylor Widener, born Nov 13, 1852, at Piercetown, Kousiusko Co, Ind: son of Willis Widener; education, high school; married Hettie Waterman of Corning, Iowa Jan 18, 1882; dry good merchant; church, Congregational; fraternal societies, F. & A. M., K. of P,; Republican; Member of the School Board for 10 years; address, Corning, Iowa.
"Lived in Indiana with my parents until 20 years old then I emigrated to Ills. in 1875. Worked in a dry goods store for five years then I came to Iowa, my present location in 1886. Have been here ever since, Have been a member of the Congregational Church ever since and Superintendent of the Sunday school for 10 years.
My father, Willis Widener, died in 1873, in Kosciuko Co, Ind where I was born in 1853. My father came to Ind from Columbus Ohio in 1851 with his wife and seven children. My uncle, John Widener died in 1875. Father had two other brothers, Joseph and Henry. he also had three sisters, one lived and died near Columbus, Ohio, one in Clinton, Ind and the other in Hardin Co, Iowa. I remember several years ago, perhaps about 1874, of a brother of my father, John Widener, telling me that the Widener family first landed in the City of Philadelphia from Germany and the date he did not have but perhaps sometime in the 18th century. Sometimes later the Widener family or a part of them moved westward to Ohio, in south of Columbus in what is called the Scioto Country ot the Scioto Bottoms. I think called so by virtue of the Scioto River running through that country. I think I remember also of my father mentioning the Darby and Little Darby River in connection with that country. There is still, I think, some reminents of this family in that part. My Grandfather Joseph Widener, I think that was his name, died when father was five years old, and that would be about the year 1815 as my father was born in 1810. I remember of hearing father say that he lived with an uncle several years after his father died, who ran a big distillery in Ohio. I think his name was Jacob Widner , spelled in those days with one E. There were four or five brothers in my Grandfathers family Jacob, Henry and Joseph but I am not certain as to the other name but I am quite creditably informed that they were all well-to-do men in Ohio, south of Columbus."
