Notes:
Military: Private Company B, 44th Inf. Regiment, Vol. Enlisted 22 Nov 1861 at Pierceton, Kosciusko Co, IN (from discharge papers). Served in Co B, 44th Indiana Infantry under Captain James S. Getty. The 44th fought in the battles at Fort Donelson (Feb. 14-16, 1862), Shilo (April 6-7, 1862), Stone River (Dec. 30, 1862-Jan. 3, 1863) and Chickamauga (Sept. 19-20, 1863). Wounded in thigh on Sept. 19, 1863 and after laying on the battlefield for 15 days his wound was dressed. He was taken prisoner by the South on Sept. 21, 1863 and soon exchanged. He was discharged on May 18, 1864 at Indianapolis and returned to Pierceton where Willis signed a declaration on May 28, 1864 for William`s invalid Army pension. The declaration stated that his occupation has been a farmer and not able scarcely to walk and cannot perform any manual labor. 1865: Enumeration of soldiers families. Living Monroe Twp. No family listed. 1866: Enumeration of males: living Monroe Twp age 23. 1869: moved to Farmington, IL & set up a grocer/hardware store. 1877: set up a dry good business. Was a member of the Congregational Church & voted for the Republican party. 1880 Census: Colorado Springs, Elpaso Co, Co 29yrs occupation painter, states father born VA. Possibly died Colorado.(?) 1896: buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Cone family lot, section 7.
