Mrs. Lavina Waterman died at the home of her son, John Waterman, in Glenwood last Thursday, aged 85 years, 4 months and 25 days. The remains were brought to Corning on train number 4 Saturday for interment. For years Mrs. Waterman was a resident of Corning and many friends here mourn her demise.
Miss Lavina Long was born in Pleasant Unity, West Moreland county, Pennsylvania, April 6, 1826. She grew to womanhood in that place and was there married to Samuel B. Waterman on the 3rd of February, 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Waterman later moved to Illinois. They were pioneers of that state. In 1872 the family located on a farm near Creston, Iowa, where they remained about two years, then came to Corning. Mr. Waterman conducted the old Lindell hotel in our city eight or ten years, then on account of ill health retired from active duties. He passed from this life about fourteen years ago in December. After the death of her husband Mrs. Waterman made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Z.T. Widener, in our city until eight or ten years ago when Mr. Widener and his family moved to Montana. At that time Mrs. Waterman decided to make her home in Glenwood with her son, John. To Mr. and Mrs. Waterman seven children were born, four of whom preceded the mother in death. The living are Frank Waterman, of Council Bluffs; John Waterman, of Glenwood, and Mrs. Z.T. Widener, of Bozeman, Mont. The deceased children are Miss Hester; Grant, who died in infancy; Samuel, who passed away at the age of 14 years, and Mrs. C.M. Waldron, who died about three years ago in Los Angeles. Mrs. Waterman was a member of the Congregational church in Corning for a number of years and later of the Glenwood church. She was a conscientious christian lady and had the respect of all who knew her. During the past eight months Mrs. Waterman was ill with a cancerous tumor and most of the time was confined to her bed. As mentioned above she passed away last Thursday. Funeral services were held at the home of her son, John Waterman, in Glenwood Saturday morning, September 2d, at 9:30 o`clock, conducted by Rev. Mr. Graves, pastor of the Glenwood M.E. church, after which the body was brought to Corning for interment in Walnut Grove cemetery. The service at the grave was in charge of Rev. C.G. Marshall, pastor of the local Congregational church. Those who accompanied the body to our city were Mrs. Z.T. Widener, of Bozeman, Mont.; Frank Waterman, of Council Bluffs, and John Waterman, of Glenwood, the children of the deceased; Misses Gladys and Hazel Waterman, of Glenwood, her granddaughters, and William and Charles Stevens, nephews from Omaha.
