She was born in Indiana and moved with her family to Wakenda, Carroll County, Missouri. She married her first husband, John Tolbert Arterburn, 25 Dec 1860, in Carroll County, MO. They had two children, John Nevil Arterburn and Osa Jane Arterburn (Mrs. George O. Adkins). John had been a member of Captain Love`s company, Seventh Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, from which he had been discharged for physical disability. After the injury, he returned home only to be killed on July 11, 1864, by the famous guerrilla chieftain, William T. Anderson. After the death of John, Elizabeth married John`s brother, James Edward Arterburn, 16 Feb 1870, also in Carroll County, MO. They had four sons, George Edward Arterburn, Presley Arterburn, Samuel N. Arterburn, and William Jackson Arterburn.
