Notes:
1850 Census: NJ, Living with the family is a 13yr old black girl named Mary Spence and attending school. Will: Proved Dec 1860.
From THE GOVERNORS OF ARKANSAS, Essays in Political Biography, edited by Timothy P. Donovan & Willard B. Gatewood, Jr. (Flanagin article written by Michael B. Dougan). The University of Arkansas Press, Fayetteville, AR, 1981. Book on file at Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives. "Occupation: cabinetmaker, merchant (undertaker/furniture dealer)"
From HISTORY OF GLOUCESTER, SALEM & CUMBERLAND COUNTIES by Cushing & Sheppard, p. 1883
"James, one of these sons, was a native of Salem County and acquired the trade of a cabinet maker, which was followed asiduously for a period of fifteen years, after which he chose the more active vocation of a farmer, and moved to Cumberland Co, NJ (believe his farm was in the Roadstown, NJ area). On his retirement from business he became a resident of Bridgeton, NJ where his death occured."
Cemetery Records at the Salem County Historical Society show an Ann J. Flanagin that was buried at Woodstown Baptist and "died Oct. 16, 1829, aged 7 years". (Book #4 Gravestone Inscriptions) Don`t know the connection to James.
Cumberland County Wills: Will written 4/30/1860, proved 12/1860.
From "Portrait and Biographical Album of Johnson and Pawnee Counties, Nebraska James Flanagin, Jr., was reared on the home farm with his parents, in New Jersey, but when approaching manhood learned the cabinet-maker`s trade, at which he worked a period of ten years. After this, however, he fell into the habits of his ancestors, and taking up agriculture, was thus occupied until his earthly labors were ended. He was married in Cumberland County, N. J., to Miss Mary Harris. They lived in that county until their decease, the father passing away in 1859, and the mother twelve years later, in 1871. They also were the parents of eight children, all of whom lived to mature years, having been named respectively; James, Harris, Jacob, John; Rachel, who became the wife of James Glaspey; Elizabeth, Mrs. William Dare; Mary A., the wife of Alford Mumford, and Hannah.
