From article on file with Salem County Historical Society as told by Miss Miriam B. Thorp who was the granddaughter of James Flanagin:
"Was in two naval engagements between the US and England. He was in Perry`s Victory on the Lake, also in the engagement between the Constitution and Gueriere, on which occasion he received a slight wound in his hand from an English musket ball, for which he received a pension the remainder of his life."
