"Hay Baler Accident Fatal to Dawn Man"
James Sperry, 44, Dawn, died at 11:55 pm, Fri., June 17, at the Chillicothe hospital from injuries he received Thursday afternoon in a hay bailing accident.
The body was taken to the Robertson Funeral Home in Jamesport and was remoed to the home of Mr. Sperry`s father in the Blue Mound Community.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 pm Sunday from the New Salem Baptist Church, northwest of Coloma, with the Rev. J. B. Sumners, of Marshall officiating. Burian in New Salem Cem.
Mr. Sperry was taken to Chillicothe Hospital about 5:45 p.m. Thursday and afterwards underwent emergency surgery for amputation of his right arm and right leg. The accident occurred while he was working alone in a field in the Enon community.
Mr. Sperry said that the machine had got stuck where twine is wrapped around the hay and that he had kicked at the bail with his right foot to free it without turning the machine off. The baler seized his right leg at this point and also his right arm, when Sperry attempted to free himself. He was held in that manner in the running baler for more than an hour before his accident was discovered by Virgil Jones and help was summoned.
There was considerale difficulty in extricating the injured man from the machine and was necessary to dismantle part of it to free him. His leg was mangled to about mid-thigh and his arm to about midway between the elbow and shoulder.
Help at the scene was given by Ed Barron, Virgil Jones, and his son, Terry Jones.
Mr. Sperry was born Sept. 23, 1911 in the Dawn community and spent most of his lifetime there. At the time of his death he made his home with Nelson Barron for whom he was working.
Surviving are his father, a sister, Mrs. Leta Corf of Tina and two brothers, Richard Sperry of Chillicothe, Alvis Sperry of Tina, in addition to a large number of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Mr. Sperry was preceeded in death by his mother, a sister and a brother.
